Home remedy for UTI
(Urinary Tract Infections)

Looking for a home remedy for UTI?

Well, I have a friend who used to get urinary tract infections quite often, and she has a remedy that really worked well for her when the infections were acute. She would make a strong infusion of yarrow (Achillea millefolium) (flower and leaf), uva ursi leaf (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) and a bit of marshmallow root (Althea officinalis) and drink that while the symptoms persisted. This protocol invariably eased the symptoms quickly and cleared up her infections.

To make this urinary tract infection remedy, you will need:

  • .4 oz dried yarrow flower and leaves
  • .4 oz dried uva ursi leaves
  • .2 oz. dried marshmallow root
  1. Put this mix of dried herbs into a quart mason jar and then fill the jar with boiling water.
  2. Let the mix steep for at least 4 hours.
  3. Strain and drink over the course of your day.

The symptoms should be alleviated within the first day or two, but continue to drink an infusion like this for 5 days in order to be sure the infection has completely cleared up.

This will not be the most pleasant tasting tea to drink, but Rosalee sure found the results worth the unpleasantness.

If urinary tract infections are a chronic issue for you, it is important to go beyond this urinary tract infection remedy and look at ways to more fully address what is going on for you.

These kinds of bladder infections occur because of bacteria growing in our bladders. The symptoms include burning sensations when urinating, feeling like you need to urinate often, but not much urine coming out, incontinence, and even bloody urine and pelvic pain.

There are several things you can do to ward off an infection before it takes hold. At the first sign of symptoms you can start drinking lots of water - a glass every hour.

Unsweetened cranberry juice can also be an amazing ally.

It is the alkaline quality of our urine during a uti that causes the stinging and burning sensations when we urinate.

Cranberry juice will help lower the pH of our urine, help kill the bacteria and make the bladder wall slippery so that the bacteria cannot latch on. Remember that sweeteners will feed the infection, so it is very important to drink the unsweetened cranberry juice.

Drink 1 glass to 1 quart of the juice each day.

Also, if you have chronic uti's it will be helpful to eliminate all of your sugar intake for one month (fruit sugars and even the amount of carbs in your diet need to be taken into consideration here).

Other aspects of a lasting uti remedy include nourishing and tonifying your body so that the infections stop occurring.

My friend Rosalee says that when she started drinking a quart of nettle (Urtica dioica) infusion every day her chronic urinary tract infections stopped altogether. Herbalist Susun Weed also recommends pelvic floor exercises. These are actually quite simple and can make a huge difference.

So, after urinating, close your eyes, relax, breathe out, and see if you can squeeze out one last dribble of urine. Practiced regularly this exercise will help tone your pelvic floor and discourage recurring uti's.

Uti's are so uncomfortable, and not easy to treat through allopathic means.

So, I hope this article and these urinary tract infection remedies give you some empowering information for handling the infections yourself, with the help of some great herbal allies.
