The Story...

Grandma needs huckleberries to bake a pie. You and your cousins embark on an adventure up the mountain to collect berries as well as herbs she uses.

Will you all harvest the right plants to help with the trouble you run into along the way?

Will you make it back before nightfall?

The only way to win is by helping each other out.

Wildcraft! teaches you 25 important edible and medicinal plants and their uses in mostly first aid situations. (Wildcrafting is the harvesting of wild plants)

It also teaches team work, for you will rely on each other’s knowledge of plants and good fortune to make it to the Huckleberry Patch and safely back to Grandma’s.

Wildcraft! is a great introduction to the world of edible and medicinal herbs for children of ALL ages.

It’s a beautifully illustrated, nature based, cooperative game created in the tradition of the classic board games.

Wildcraft! includes a 20x20 inch game board, instructions, 4 player pieces, 52 plant cards, 52 trouble cards, 25 cooperative cards, and a spinner. It also comes with a downloadable story to enhance the story of the game.

• Made in the U.S.A.

• Box/board made with 100% recycled chipboard.

• Printed with vegetable oil based inks.

• Water based coating on paper, no varnish.

• Forest Stewardship Council certified paper.

• All material is 100% recyclable.

Wildcraft! is great family fun.

Gather up the kids, bring out the board game, and learn about medicinal and edible plants in the most fun way imaginable.

This is wonderfully cooperative game where everyone is a winner and everyone learns something about plants!

I love your herbal game!

A youngin' I played with took to the game like a duck in water. No reading of the rules really needed. He was bouncing all over the place finding the herbs which matched his troubles and so easily giving cooperation to others to help them move up the board or identify and give them needed herbs.

The herb drawings are wonderful - just enough detail to recognize - the uses for the troubles great with the variety of possibilities, the colors vibrant, the play cooperative, teaching, fun and suspenseful all wrapped up together in one fun time!!! Bravo to all of you!!!

Wildcraft is a blast!

Green cooperation, herbs, healing, eating and lots of fun. If only I had this when I was growing up in London, I might have become a herbalist by now….

I found a game I love the best.

My daughter and I play this more than any other board game in the house. Now she remembers more about herbs from our wilderness walks. At age six, she knows more binomial spelling than any school curriculum covers. She learned telling time from the way the moon moves, we both laugh at our "troubles" on the path and delight in our creativity as we use whatever herbs we gathered to heal each other. Everyone in our family says "Yes" to spending free time on An Herbal Adventure. Plus, concern for Grandma, the role-playing, and the visual beauty of the game spark our love of Art and family. After years spent playing and teaching cooperative games from the Findhorn community, I found a game I love the best.

“Wildcraft! has many of the things I look for in a game... It’s educational, easy to use, beautiful to look at, you learn a lot about herbs...and you laugh a lot.”

–Bobbe Branch, Montessori Teacher, Seattle, WA

“I love that it is not limited to a particular age group. I found myself using the plant cards as flash cards! ...You’ve developed a wonderful learning tool to encourage entry into the world of herbalism. Thanks!”

–Karen Mallinger,
U.P., Michigan

“Wow! My daughter and my partner sat down to play after dinner and had so much fun. My daughter was immediately wanting to run outside to have an adventure (never mind it was already dark) with the plants.

Living in the Southwest I was a bit worried it would mostly be northeastern herbs and the like, but almost all of the plants you included grow here as well. And thanks so much including some plants that too often get ignored”

 What parents are saying...

I wanted to let you know how much our family appreciates the original Wildcraft game. I gave it to my son and his family last Christmas, intending to give my grandson (now 5 years old) an opportunity to learn more about plants.

They have played it throughout the year, along with other board games. But his mom says lately he is going through a phase where he doesn't want to lose, and so the coorperative rather than competitive focus of the game allows him to have lots of fun and not have to worry about losing.

His parents also say that having the pictures so that he can play, even though he can't read yet, is another really positve part of the game.

And I love the fact that when he comes to visit he can go out into the yard with me and we can find and talk about the plants he has met while playing. And then he will say, "Are you sure you have enough salve made up Grandma? That would be a good activity for you and me to do this afternoon. You don't want to run out!!" Another herbalist awakens. Thanks again.

–Sylvia Newberry (Ayden's grandma), Hartland, VT

We gave this to the family for Christmas and my 4 (almost 5 yr old) son insisted we stop opening presents so we could play.  He LOVED the game.  Even my barely 3 yr old daughter was able to play and not get frustrated.  My husband and I had fun playing with them and talking and teaching.  My son has gotten it out to play by himself and can't wait to help other people on their trek up the mountain too.  He is learning why mommy loves comfrey and plantain to name a few herbs.

–Marisa Coreless

We just played the game! It is great!!! Brenna was so excited to search through her herbal medicine collection and eager to share her remedies with me, even when I had my own! You guys did a great service to our youngsters (and the older alike) by finding such a friendly and easy way to introduce herbal medicine. Hats off! Great work.

–Jessica Moore, herbalist

Just a quick note to let you know that I had a great game of Wildcraft! yesterday with my 7 year-old boy. You guys did an absolutely fantastic job of designing it. Way to go.

–Robert Saxton, MN

"Wildcraft" is awesome! I have some homeschoolers that I am going to recommend this to immediately!! I think my kids would love to play the game and I love that they will be picking up VERY useful info in the process.

– K. Cooper

I have seen this on the site and am counting the days for it to be available.  Not only do I want this but I think it is perfect for teaching our scout group plant ids and teamwork. Thank you so much for all the work you do!!!

–A. Herder

We plan to order for our family and two as Christmas gifts.  The things we like about it is that it will help my kids learn their medicinal plants. They tend to get confused and bored looking at field guides all the time. This will make the learning fun. We can play the game and then they will begin to recognize the plants when we are out in nature. I also LOVE how beautiful the artwork of the game looks.

–K. Rahm

Wildcraft! is exquisitely illustrated

Naturalist and artist Beatriz Mendoza uses vibrant watercolors to create a colorful and playful world for Wildcraft! The plant cards show the level of detail needed for identification in the field.

The game board... (click here for a larger view)

The plant cards...

26 plants are featured on 52 cards.

Plants include Nettle, Yellow dock, wild mustard, huckberry, dandelion, comfrey, cottonwood, caledula, echinacea, chamomile, field mint, wild rose, St. Johnswort, horsetail, yarrow, herb robert, elder, burdock, cattail, coltsfoot, valerian, plantain, white willow, chickweed, jewelweed, catnip

The trouble cards...

There are 52 trouble cards. The icons on these cards match up with the icons on the Plant Cards. That's how you know what plant can help with your trouble card. This way, even little kids can play!

Wildcraft! builds teamwork

Wildcraft! is a cooperative game, and fosters teamwork and imagination. Players must work together to "win" the game. However, don't let this make you think it is not an exciting journey! Trying to get back to Grandma's house before nightfall along with all the pitfalls encountered along the way will keep you on the edge of your seats.

Wildcraft! features storytelling and fosters imagination

Wildcraft! designer, Kimberly Gallagher, M.Ed. has a passion for storytelling. Not only is there a story surrounding the game concept, stories are also infused into the playing experience. You can chose to download a free storybook that goes with the game. When players get to a "rest space," they can choose to read the accompanying story! The stories teach players about plants, safety, and sustainable and ethical harvesting.

This is the downloadable story that comes free with Wildcraft! (The instructions tell you how to download it).

Wildcraft! connects players with nature

Wildcraft! brings you through several ecosystems while you are going up the mountain. Plants on the board are positioned in the ecosystems they would naturally grow in. Therefore, players are learning about plants, where they grow, and what to use them for on several levels.

Wildcraft! fosters a connection to nature. Before you know it, you and your kids will be identifying plants in the park or yard... and you'll find yourself saying, "Hey! That's chickweed! I can eat that AND use it to heal a wound."

Wildcraft! teaches about plants and their edible and medicinal uses

Well, this is obvious, but we wanted to mention that the game teaches plant uses on a food and first aid level. Chronic health issues are not addressed. How to properly use the plants, when to pick them, and what parts to use are not addressed in the game.

Wildcraft! keeps it simple and keeps it safe!

Wildcraft! is great for younger players

Since the game is "icon" driven, once your child has played once or twice, they can play on their own.

No reading is required. Older kids and adults will get A LOT from this game. However, even if your 5 year old isn't reading, they are "patterning" on what the plants look like and what you can use them for. You can also make up simpler rules for the wee ones.

And NO prior knowledge of plants is needed

What do kids love most in board games?

Hint: Remember the slides, short cuts and ladders in Candyland or Chutes and Ladders? When you were a kid playing board games, weren't these your favorite parts?

Well, Wildcraft! has waterfalls to slide down, logs to cross and deer trails to wander down.

We designed Wildcraft! in the tradition of the classic board games.

Wildcraft! has been featured in many prestigious educational toy catalogs such as Waldorf, Montessori, and homeschooling focused stores as well as Chinaberry.

A portion of the proceeds from this game benefit United Plant Savers, whose mission is to protect native medicinal plants of the United States and Canada and their native habitat while ensuring an abundant renewable supply of medicinal plants for generations to come.

Hi John,

We played our first round of the game immediately upon arrival and had a blast, even with my 2 yr old son causing his own brand of chaos throughout!

Later that afternoon, while the little one slept, my daughter and I played again for well over an hour. At one point I had to go check on my son and my pre-reading daughter (4.75 yrs old) came running into the room with a trouble and remedy card in hand and exclaimed "Mama! I got sleepy, but I have horsetail!" So sweet!

We plan to go exploring this week to find real examples of some of the herbs in the game, and will be using our Wildcards to help with identification. Perhaps we'll even bring some yummy treats home to add to our lunch!

We are home educators and it now looks like this game and your herbal kit (which I just ordered!) will be at the core of our studies this year. What a fabulous family learning opportunity!

With much gratitude,

Melanie Mulrooney, Canada
