Sugar Facial Scrub

all remedies and recipes natural skin care

I love facial scrubs! They gently exfoliate the skin, removing old skin cells to bring out fresh radiant skin. But when you buy facial scrubs at the store they can be very expensive. Recently I was at a friend’s house and noticed that she had this super swanky facial scrub for a mere $15 an ounce! I checked out the ingredients and thought, “Not only could I make this myself, but I can even make this better!”

So I played around with various ingredients and the following recipe is what I came up with. I’ve been using this scrub for the past month and have been getting compliments on my skin! The first time I used it, my husband told me my face was actually sparkling!

Sugar Facial Scrub

Indulge in a luxurious facial scrub for soft, glowing skin. Sugar, rosehip seed oil, and essential oil combine for a wonderfully invigorating DIY homemade sugar scrub.

Ingredients you'll need...

  • 2/3 cup organic fine sugar
  • 1 tablespoon rosehip seed oil
  • 10 drops of an essential oil of geranium or lavender essential oil
  • Optional: 1 tablespoon ground rose petals
  1. Combine the rosehip seed oil and essential oil. Now combine this mixture with the rest of the ingredients.
  2. Stir well to evenly distribute the oil throughout the sugar.
  3. Once the mixture is combined well, you can place it in a jar and label.

Yield: this recipe makes about three ounces by volume.

Sugar Benefits

The base of this facial scrub is sugar. It’s inexpensive and much healthier to spread it on your face rather than eat it in its various forms this holiday season. The sugar granules form the perfect gritty base for a gentle facial scrub.

Rosehip Seed Oil Benefits (Rosa spp.)

The other main ingredient is rosehip seed oil. If you’ve never used rosehip seed oil you are in for a luxurious treat! This oil is made by pressing the seeds from rose hips producing a non-greasy oil that is high in many components needed for healthy skin. Some of these components include vitamin E and vitamin A. Vitamin A promotes cell regeneration, and increases collagen and elastin levels. Vitamin E and fatty acids  are vital skin nutrients.

Using rosehip seed oil will not only increase the vitality of your skin it can actually help to repair damaged skin. You can use it to help skin recover from scars, burns, age spots, stretch marks and even pre-mature aging from sun damage.

Rose Benefits (Rosa spp.)

Rose petals are anti-inflammatory and can gently soothe and tone the skin. Their subtle scent also calms the nervous system and gladdens the heart.

Lavender Benefits (Lavandula angustifolia)

Lavender essential oil uplifts the nervous system while soothing irritated skin and promoting tissue repair.

Geranium Benefits (Pelargonium graveolens or Pelargonium x asperum)

As an essential oil, geranium’s calming scent is a balm for the nervous system. Geranium essential oil also can help ease inflammation and support acne-prone skin.

Here are a few frequently asked questions about this sugar scrub...

Can I use salt instead of sugar?

Yes, instead of a DIY sugar scrub, you could opt for a salt scrub. If you do choose to make a salt scrub, you'll want to select sea salt because non-sea salt can be harsh on the skin (regardless of whether you have sensitive skin, dry skin, or less sensitive skin). Sea salt combines well with rosehip seed oil to help scrub away dead skin cells and promote glowing skin.

Can I use this facial scrub with acne?

Facial scrubs can be an essential part of your healthy skin routine. This particular preparation is great for all skin types, but I wouldn’t use any facial scrub when there is a lot of acne present.

What species of lavender and geranium essential oil should I use?

For lavender, you’ll want to use Lavandula angustifolia essential oil, and for the geranium you’ll want to use Pelargonium graveolens or Pelargonium x asperum essential oil.

Can I use this as a body scrub?

Yes, you could use this as a body scrub. If you do so, I would potentially work with a different carrier oil (like coconut oil or olive oil) because rosehip seed oil is more expensive.
